Alexander the Great’s Central Asia Tour – a tour through the regions where Alexander made his most lasting impact. Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan cover the ancient territories of Sogdiana, Margiana, and Bactria – lands that held him in a two-year guerrilla war he hadn’t anticipated. Here he married Roxana, founded fortresses that became cities, and left a Hellenistic imprint on local architecture that endured for centuries. For anyone serious about ancient history in Central Asia, this is the route.

Alexander the Great’s Central Asia Tour begins in Dushanbe, the Tajik capital, where an ancient fortress and the history museum set the tone for everything that follows. The next day heads to Iskanderkul Lake – named after Alexander and wrapped in legends from his campaigns – reached via the high Anzob Pass. The route then passes through the town of Istaravshan before arriving in Khujand, founded by Alexander as Alexandria Eschate – the Furthest Alexandria. The Uzbekistan section opens in Tashkent, then moves on to Samarkand, the ancient Marakanda, which served as Alexander’s operational base during his Asian campaign and was the scene of the notorious feast at which he killed his trusted companion Cleitus the Black. From Samarkand, the tour continues to the Nurata Mountains and the town of Nurata, both tied to local Alexander legends, before Bukhara closes the Uzbekistan leg – a city his army may well have passed through. The final stage crosses into Turkmenistan: ancient Merv, the gleaming modern capital Ashgabat, and the ruins of Old Nisa, where Hellenistic culture left a visible trace.

If ancient history, ruined fortresses, and the story of the most ambitious military campaign of the ancient world are what draw you to travel, Alexander the Great’s Central Asia Tour was built for you. Browse the full itinerary, explore photos from the route, and start planning.
