Tbilisi and Mtskheta 2-Day Tour combines the best of Georgia old and new with memorable back-to-back day tours. Travel Tbilisi by funicular, cable car, foot and private vehicle from famed historic places such as Narikala Fortress and Holy Trinity Cathedral to the cultural landmarks of Jan Shardeni Street and the Georgian National Opera Theater, in addition to guided tours of Mtskheta’s three UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Cultural capital Tbillisi and religious center Mtskheta are two of Georgia’s most popular destinations, and for good reason. Ancient Mtskheta was once the seat of the royal court, and each monastery, cathedral and shop are still steeped in an air of regality. Tbilisi’s enchantment simply grows with the passing of time, as newer city additions – Bridge of Peace, Freedom Square, Leaning Clock Tower, Mtatsminda Park – mingle with centuries-old Metekhi Church, Jumah Mosque, Sioni Cathedral and others to create a unique and alluring metropolis.

Your guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel in Tbilisi to begin your city tour. Your private tour will include:
  • Tour of Holy Trinity Cathedral (also known as Sameba Church), one of the largest houses of worship in the world and the central chapel of the Georgian Orthodox Church.
  • Drive to Tbilisi’s modern quarter, passing the Parliament Building on Rustaveli Avenue before reaching Freedom Square, which impresses with a golden statue of St. George and 18th-19th century architecture.
  • Continue to Metekhi Church (c. 13th century), a medieval structure on the brink of the Kura (Mtkvari) River and guarded by a statue of King Vakhtang Gorgasali, who allegedly wielded a 16-kilogram sword during his lifetime.
  • Walk across the Bridge of Peace, which spans the Kura River into Rike Park. Built in 2010, the Bridge of Peace stretches for 155 meters and was designed by renowned architect Michele De Lucchi.
  • From popular Rike Park, take a cable car up to Narikala Fortress (4th century), Georgia’s oldest citadel and the best spot for a panoramic view of the city and the botanical gardens. Nearby stands the 20-meter-high statue of Kartlis Deda, also known as the Mother of Georgia.
  • Wander through Old Tbilisi, the city’s largest district. On the way pass Jumah Mosque, one of the few mosques in the world that holds services for both Shia and Sunni Muslims.
  • Discover the quaint and picturesque Bridge of Lovers near the cooling waters of the 22-meter-high Legvtakhevi Waterfall.
  • Continue through the historic Abanotubani District, passing by the famous Tbilisi Sulfur Baths which, at least in legend, are closely tied with the city’s founding.
  • Exit Tbilisi’s Old Town and stroll along Jan Shardeni Street (Jean Chardin), an area filled with cozy coffee shops, wine tasting bars and souvenir stores.
  • Enter Sioni Cathedral (c. 7th century) to admire its jaw-dropping interior of gold and turquoise frescoes.
  • Take a photo near the cartoonish Leaning Clock Tower of Tbilisi, which marks the site of the city’s famous Reza Gabriadze Puppet Theater.
  • Stand in awe of Anchiskhati Basilica Church (6th century), a Georgian Orthodox Cathedral and the oldest house of worship in Tbilisi.
Transfer to the hotel or enjoy free time in Old Tbilisi.
Tour duration: approximately 6 hours
In the morning drive to Mtskheta (25km, 30min), ancient capital of Iberia and a holy pilgrimage site for most Georgians. In Mtskheta you will visit:
  • Jvari Orthodox Monastery (6th century), a unique remnant of the early Georgian church built at the top of a hill. The church overlooks the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi Rivers and amazes its visitors with simple yet beautiful facades.
  • Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (11th century), where one of the holiest items of the orthodox Christian world - the seamless robe, or chiton, worn by Jesus Christ at crucifixion - is believed to be buried. Admire its stunning architecture and moving frescoes as you learn the various legends connected with the church.
  • Take a walk on the lovely streets of Mtskheta to admire the homes and balconies or shop for Georgia’s famous national sweet, churchkhela.
  • Samtavro Monastery (11th century), former center of the Georgian Orthodox Church and burial site of Wueen Nana and King Mirian, who founded the monastery. The complex attracts many religious pilgrims and includes several churches, bell towers, frescoes and an active convent.
Drive back to Tbilisi and admire the classical architecture of Kashveti Church of St. George before continuing to the Georgian National Opera Theater, one of the oldest opera halls in Eastern Europe.
Tour either the Open-Air Museum of Ethnography, which provides models of traditional homes from each region of Georgia and interesting hands-on exhibits, or the Georgian National Museum, a historical gallery covering Georgian and Caucasian history from the BC era through Soviet occupation (closed Mondays).
Take the Tbilisi Funicular to the top of Mount Mtatsminda and enjoy Mtatsminda Park, a well-loved recreation and entertainment park.
