Iskanderkul Lake in northern Tajikistan’s Fann Mountains is considered one of the most gorgeous lakes in the former Soviet Union, and one glance at its calm, pristine waters will leave you convinced of this claim. Iskanderkul Lake means “Lake of Alexander the Great”, for legend has it that the world conqueror stopped at the lake during his travels. Whether or not these rumors are true, the enduring waters of Iskanderkul Lake, accentuated by nearby Fann Niagara Waterfall and the encircling snow-capped mountains that graze the sky, will stretch your imagination and stay with you long after you’ve departed.
On the Iskanderkul Lake Day Tour you’ll leave the busyness of Dushanbe for a scenic morning drive through the Anzob Pass to reach Iskanderkul Lake. Spend the afternoon rejuvenating body and soul in the fresh mountain air, where activities can include swimming, resting on the beach and hiking to Fann Niagara Waterfall, before returning to the capital by evening.

Tour Itinerary:

In the morning, your guide and driver will meet you at the hotel lobby in Dushanbe. Drive to Iskanderkul Lake (130km, 3hrs), enjoying the beautiful scenery of towering red-tinted mountains along the way. The drive along the M34 Highway will continue through the Anzob Pass, which runs 3400m above sea level and is considered the best viewing point for the Fann Mountains.
Spend the afternoon at legendary Iskanderkul Lake, where you’ll have free time to walk around, snap photos, enjoy a picnic lunch, dip your feet in the water or simply rest by its calm shores. A short hike will take you to the 40-meter-high Fann Niagara Waterfall, where an observation deck allows you to view the falls unhindered. The area also holds small natural springs and Snake Lake, named for the unusually large number of snakes that inhabit its waters due to their warm temperatures.
Return to Dushanbe in the afternoon. End of Iskanderkul Lake Day Tour.
