Yangykala Canyon Tour

2
Days
Turkmenbashi, Yangykala Canyon, Gozli Ata

Yangykala Canyon literally translates as “Fire Fortresses”, an apt description of this 24-kilometer stretch of beauty in northwest Turkmenistan that’s been dubbed the “Grand Canyon of Central Asia”. Shaped by sea, wind and rain over thousands of years, these awe-inspiring rainbow cliffs become surreal when engulfed in the golden rays of sunset. Amazingly, very few visitors ever make it to this canyon, and it retains its isolated, pristine calm to this day.
The Yangykala Canyon Tour is a once-in-a-lifetime excursion to these remote cliffs of sculptured beauty. This overnight experience includes transportation to the canyon on remote roads by an experienced driver and camping among its rocky heights. You’ll pay a visit the next day to a highly revered Turkmen mausoleum before ending the tour with a walk along the azure shores of the Caspian Sea.

After breakfast, meet your guide and driver at hotel reception in Turkmenbashi. Drive to one of the most picturesque natural sites in all Turkmenistan, Yangykala Canyon (170km, 3hrs).
Enjoy the day among the cliffs and gorges of Yangykala Canyon, the perfect location for beautiful panoramic photos of white, yellow and red canyon slopes. Climb to Crocodile Mouth, a small pass and unique rock formation from which you’ll have a bird’s eye view of the canyon. Enjoy a campfire dinner under the clear evening sky.
Overnight in tents in Yangykala Canyon.
After breakfast, travel in the morning to Gozli Ata Mausoleum (67km, 2hrs). Gozli Ata (“All-Seeing Father”) was a well-respected 14th century Sufi saint who was killed during a Mongol invasion. His grave, along with the adjacent grave of his wife, is considered one of the holiest sites in Turkmenistan today. The Kemal Ata Cemetery was begun near their burial site and now surrounds their graves.
Return in the afternoon to Turkmenbashi, taking a short detour to the Awaza seaside resort complex that lies along the Caspian Sea. Go for a stroll along the Caspian shore and enjoy the fresh sea air. Return to Turkmenbashi (12km, 20min).
Drop off at the hotel or domestic airport.
End of the Yangykala Canyon Tour.
