Kazakhstan // Kyrgyzstan // Tajikistan // Turkmenistan // Uzbekistan Central Asia covers an essential territory of the Asian part of the planet. Its area makes up more than 1295 thousand square km which is bigger than Germany, France and Great Britain in total. The Central Asian territory spreads from the Caspian sea on the west to the borders with China on the East and from the Aral-Irtysh watershed on the north to the border with Iran and Afganistan on the south. Its western and northern regions are represented with vast valleys, deserts and dry steppes surrounded by Pamir-and-Alay and Tien-Shan mountain ranges on the east, some of their peaks are the highest in our country and reach up to 7.5 kilometers over the sea level.
Still Central Asia is far from being just a geographical definition. Primarily, it"s a large historical and cultural region having a twenty five centuries long history. It"s the region with the arranged specific historical and cultural community different from that of other regions.
The following republics are included in Central Asia: Turkmenistan which spreads from the Caspian sea to the middle flow of the one of the largest central Asian rivers Amu-Darya (Vahsh in ancient period, Ox in Greek, and Jeihun in Middle Age); Karakalpakstan within the Republic of Uzbekistan located in the lower flow of the Amu-Darya river. Uzbekistan covers the central part between the two rivers (named as Maverannahr in Middle Age) i.e. the lands between the two biggest central Asian rivers Syr-Darya and Amu-Darya. Tadjikistan situated on the south-east, and Kyrgyzstan on the north-east.
The desert areas and steppes of Central Asia are characterized by continental climate and intensive insolation, the extreme air aridity, little precipitation. The remoteness from the oceans, the major humidity source, little atmosphere precipitations, high summer temperatures, the prolonged dryness periods caused the formation of the vast desert regions here.
