The ancient settlement of Shakhrukhia
History of the Shakhrukhia archeological site

There is scarcely another archeological discovery of an ancient town which has revealed its full structure, with well preserved residential buildings, artisan workshops and fortifications, as that along the Syrdarya River in Akkurgan District of Tashkent Region.

The town arose in the early Middle Ages on the Khorasan side of the town of Benakent, and drew the attention of the Great Tamerlane. He decided it was a strategically important place and ordered the construction of a new town named for his son, Shakhrukh.

Today, travelers can walk about this town site of more than 400 hectares. There are potter's workshops from the 8th-9th centuries with evidence of an amazingly developed technology of pottery production, strong fortification walls, watchtowers, and military training grounds - all completely preserved.
